Bio

Caleb Pitman is an improvising trumpet player, composer, and educator originally from central Maine and currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. Caleb’s artistic work and study is largely focused on Black-American improvised music from the 20th and 21st centuries, inspired largely by musicians like Geri Allen, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, Mark Turner and Ambrose Akinmusire.

Caleb is regularly hired as a sideman by both his peers and mentors, working with artists like Manuel Valera, Dave Meder, Michael Piolet, and Dezron Douglas. In the singer-songwriter space, Caleb has played professionally with Jose Gonzalez and the Polyphonic Spree. Since moving to New York City in the fall of 2024, Caleb has performed at venues like Bar Bayeux, Nublu, Birdland, Terazza 7, and Fiction.

In the studio, Caleb works as a recording artist and producer. His upcoming debut album as bandleader will be released in late 2026.

Education


In 2026, Caleb graduated with a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from New York University where he studied performance with Michael Rodriguez, Dezron Douglas, Drew Gress, Billy Drewes, Tony Moreno, Manuel Valera, and Tony Moreno. He studied composition with Drew Gress, Rich Shemaria, and Josue Vera.

After graduating with an undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas in 2022, Caleb moved to Dallas, Texas for two years where he was a regular bandleader and featured guest artist performing with his quartet at iconic Texas venues like the Balcony Club, Reveler’s Hall, and the Freeman. In 2025, Caleb was hired as a featured guest artist and clinician for the ILTexas Garland high school big band.

While studying for his undergraduate degree at the University of North Texas, Caleb was a recording and touring member both the One and Two O’Clock lab bands working with artists like Maria Schneider, Gary Smulyan, Regina Carter, Caleb Hudson, Philip Dizack, and Michael Abene. While in these bands, Caleb performed at Birdland Jazz Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Jazz Showcase, . Caleb also played a part as educator in this ensembles, giving masterclasses at high schools across the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area and Chicago.
